In a home in Phoenix, Arizona, on the evening of Sunday, May 22, 2022, a young man’s life was cut short in what police have described as a tragic accident. Eighteen-year-old Brian Lujan was with his friend, Sergio Lopez Ruiz, at a residence near 71st Avenue and Thomas Road. The two friends were handling a firearm belonging to Ruiz when the gun discharged.
The bullet struck Lujan, inflicting a fatal wound.
Emergency services were called to the scene around 6:30 p.m., and he was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Brian Lujan succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The incident was a somber reminder of the dangers of handling firearms.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Phoenix police officers detained Sergio Lopez Ruiz at the scene. After being interviewed by detectives and as they processed the scene and spoke with witnesses, Ruiz was arrested. He was subsequently booked on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with the death of his friend, Brian Lujan.
