Tracy Atkins, a 50-year-old White male, was killed in a double shooting in North Omaha in the early minutes of June 18, 2019. Officers responding around midnight found Atkins and 57-year-old Michael Sykora dead inside a residence; witnesses in the complex reported hearing gunfire shortly before the discovery. The address was reported as an apartment home in the 6900 block of Northridge Drive, near the 36th and Ida area in North Omaha.
An obituary later confirmed Atkins date of death as June 18, 2019.
Investigators quickly focused on a suspect and made an arrest within a day. Omaha police took 20-year-old Nyir Kuek into custody and booked him on two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of use of a weapon to commit a felony, and possession of a gun by a prohibited person. In an early hearing, a detective testified that witnesses described an argument reportedly sparked by a text message preceding the gunfire inside the home. Subsequent filings and summaries indicated prosecutors believed Sykora was shot first during an altercation in the basement and that Atkins was then shot in a bedroom.
The case wound through multiple trials marked by mistrials and deadlocked juries. After three mistrials, a jury ultimately found Kuek not guilty of the double homicide, ending the state s prosecution against him. With that acquittal, no one has been convicted in the killings of Tracy Atkins and Michael Sykora, and the case remains without a convicted perpetrator despite the initial arrest.
