Angel Nichole Overstreet was last seen in Huntington, West Virginia, on May 1, 2021, at the age of three months. At the time of her disappearance, she was in the care of her father, Shannon Patrick Overstreet. While the exact date of her disappearance is often cited as May 7 or May 8, the last confirmed sighting was on the first of the month. The case began to unfold on May 24, 2021, when West Virginia's Child Protective Services reported Angel missing.
When questioned by CPS about his daughter's whereabouts, Shannon claimed that he had relinquished custody of the infant to two CPS workers approximately two weeks earlier. However, CPS had no record of this transfer, and inquiries with agencies in the neighboring states of Kentucky and Ohio also came up empty. Shannon was unable to provide any documentation or evidence to support his claim.
The investigation into Angel's disappearance quickly focused on her father, who has a history of violent criminal offenses. On the same day Angel was reported missing, Shannon Overstreet was arrested on unrelated charges of felony malicious wounding and battery for a brutal assault on his own mother. She required hospitalization for bleeding in the brain after he allegedly beat her and dragged her by her hair. In the search for the missing infant, law enforcement authorities conducted extensive searches, including at the residence of Angel's mother, where Shannon was known to sometimes stay. In June 2021, investigators, including the FBI and Kentucky State Police, drained and searched a pond on Shannon's property in Olive Hill, Kentucky, but no initial findings were reported. Authorities have stated that they do not believe Angel's mother was in the area when she disappeared or has any knowledge of her whereabouts.
Initially, Shannon Overstreet was named a person of interest in his daughter's disappearance. For over two years, the case remained active with few public updates. A significant development occurred in December 2023, when a grand jury indicted Shannon Overstreet on charges of murder, death of a child by a parent by child abuse, and concealment of a deceased human body. The indictment was reportedly based on evidence discovered during the June 2021 search of his Kentucky property. It was later revealed in court hearings that investigators believe that on May 4, 2021, Overstreet purchased items including a 55-gallon barrel, gasoline, and firewood. Bone fragments, later determined to be Angel's, were reportedly found in that barrel on his Kentucky farm.
Shannon Overstreet has pleaded not guilty to the charges related to his daughter's death. He is currently incarcerated, also serving a sentence for the assault on his mother and forgery.
