On December 10, 2013, at approximately 10 p.m., 34-year-old Virgil Dunn was fatally shot near 28th and Bristol Streets in Omaha, Nebraska. Surveillance footage captured Dunn making a purchase at a liquor store near 30th and Pinkney Streets shortly before the incident. As he walked home carrying a white plastic bag, a gunshot detection system recorded six shots fired in the vicinity.
Responding officers found Dunn wounded on North 28th Avenue; his wallet and the plastic bag were missing, indicating a robbery. He was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Witnesses reported seeing two individuals fleeing the scene. One witness, driving a van nearby, observed two men in hooded sweatshirts one black, the other light-colored running away. Another witness saw an African-American male, approximately six feet tall, wearing a black hoodie and possibly a hat, running toward a nearby housing project.
The investigation led to the arrest of 21-year-old Teon D. Hill on February 12, 2014. Hill was charged with first-degree murder and two counts of possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited person. In February 2016, a Douglas County jury convicted Hill of all charges. He received a life sentence for the murder conviction, with additional concurrent sentences of 15 to 20 years for each weapons charge. Hill's subsequent appeal was rejected by the Nebraska Supreme Court in January 2018, upholding his convictions and sentences.
