On September 28, 2022, a 13-year-old Hispanic male named Leonard "Lenny" Alexander Rodriguez was tragically killed in Omaha, Nebraska. The young Ralston eighth-grader, who was known for his funny personality and beautiful smile, was fatally shot near Hanscom Park. After being found with a gunshot wound, he was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Rodriguez was born on November 2, 2008, and had lived in the Omaha and Fremont areas for most of his life.
He was a beloved son, brother, and grandson who enjoyed gaming, art, and music.
The circumstances leading to his death involved a phone call from a stranger, luring him to a local park under the pretense of a fight. In the months that followed, the Omaha Police Department made two arrests in connection with the murder. The suspects, both 13-year-old boys, were taken into custody in late November 2022. Due to their age, Nebraska state law dictates that they will be tried as juveniles, a point of contention for Rodriguez's grieving family who feel this does not amount to true justice for Lenny.
Investigators have indicated that the case appears to be gang-related. One of the teenage suspects was already in custody at the Douglas County Youth Center for separate charges, including robbery, use of a gun, and auto theft. The juvenile court system means that if found guilty, the perpetrators could face penalties such as out-of-home placement, probation, or a sentence at the Kearney Youth Rehab Center, with any punishment concluding by the time they turn 19. This has raised concerns for the Douglas County Attorney, who has expressed a desire for legislative changes to allow for more severe consequences in such serious cases involving young offenders.
