On a spring evening in Omaha, Nebraska, what began as a planned confrontation between two groups of teenagers escalated into a fatal encounter for 18-year-old Tielor Williams, a Caucasian male. On April 14, 2014, Williams accompanied his friends to Gallagher Park for what was supposed to be a fight between a female friend and a male acquaintance. They were waiting in an SUV when the other group arrived.
Two individuals from the opposing group, Dennis Brewer Jr., 21, and Adrian Lester,
19, approached the vehicle. The situation quickly turned violent when Lester attempted to rob Williams and his friends. When Williams resisted, Lester shot him five times in the face and neck at close range. Williams' friend, Joshua Schmitt, who was also in the SUV, was injured in the attack but survived.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrests of both Brewer and Lester. Brewer was initially charged with criminal homicide, but his defense argued that he and Lester acted independently and that he was not the shooter. In March 2015, a jury acquitted Brewer of all charges.
Adrian Lester faced a trial for first-degree murder in June 2015. Prosecutors presented evidence that Lester was the one who shot and killed Williams during the robbery attempt. He was found guilty and, in August 2015, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. During the legal proceedings, Lester's defense sought a new trial based on a Facebook post in which Brewer allegedly claimed responsibility for the shooting. However, the judge denied this request, and Lester's conviction and life sentence were upheld.
