On the night of January 30, 2018, Omaha police were dispatched just after 11 p.m. to a home near North 65th and Jaynes Streets after a 911 caller reported that her son had shot her husband. Officers arrived to find William Bunderson Sr., 79, a White/Caucasian male, fatally wounded by gunfire; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Neighbors described the block awash in emergency lights as investigators secured the residence and began collecting evidence.
Detectives identified the victim s son, William Bunderson Jr., 55, as the suspect and took him into custody at the house without incident. He was booked on charges of first-degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony, according to local and wire reports that night and the following day.
In a court appearance soon after the shooting, prosecutors said Bunderson Jr. told authorities he had argued with his father earlier that evening. According to the account presented in court, the son went into his father s room after he had fallen asleep and shot him with a shotgun. Longtime neighbors, some of whom had known the family for decades, expressed shock at the allegation that a son could be accused of killing his father.
Public records also reflect that William Lee Bunderson Sr. died in Omaha on January 30, 2018, and was later interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Douglas County.
