In the early moments of a Monday, on July 22, 2013, the life of 33-year-old African-American male Jhonte Peters was tragically cut short in Omaha, Nebraska. Known for his great sense of humor and as a beloved son, brother, and father, Jhonte had moved to Omaha from North Carolina six years prior to be with relatives. He was a father to a six-year-old daughter who lived in North Carolina.
Though he had a criminal record and had spent time in correctional facilities, he had completed his sentences and was reintegrating into his community.
Around 12:35 a.m., Omaha police officers responded to a call of shots fired in the vicinity of 16th and Willis Streets. Arriving at the scene, they discovered Jhonte Peters in an alley between 18th and Willis Streets with a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to the Nebraska Medical Center for treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival.
