On a tragic night in Omaha, Nebraska, the life of 21-year-old Gabriel Miller, a Black/African American male, was cut short. On November 7, 2020, Miller attended a party with his close friend and one-time roommate, Tip Mut. A fight broke out at the gathering, held at a residence on Pratt Street. In the ensuing chaos, gunshots were fired.
Officers who were already en route to the location due to reports of a fight heard the shots.
Upon their arrival, they discovered that Miller and another individual, 22-year-old Goa Dat, had been shot. Both men were transported to the Nebraska Medical Center for treatment. While Dat survived his critical injuries, Miller tragically succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead at the hospital. An investigation later revealed that Miller had been shot from behind.
The investigation into the shooting led police to a surprising suspect: Gabriel Miller s own friend, 21-year-old Tip Mut. In a turn of events, investigators determined that Mut had not intended to harm Miller. Instead, it is believed he was aiming for Goa Dat during the altercation at the party and inadvertently struck his friend. The motive for the initial conflict remains unclear.
Following the investigation, Tip Mut was arrested in March 2021. He faced a number of serious charges, including second-degree murder, attempted murder, two weapons counts, and evidence tampering. In June 2021, a judge determined there was enough evidence for Mut to stand trial for the death of his friend, a case that highlights the devastating and unintended consequences of gun violence.
