On a summer day in Omaha, Nebraska, the life of a 20-year-old Black man, John Parks Jr., was tragically cut short. On July 26, 2020, Parks and a friend were enjoying a ride on their motorized dirt bikes when a black sedan began to pursue them. The chase culminated in the sedan colliding with Parks' bike. Forced to abandon his motorcycle, Parks attempted to flee on foot. However, an individual from the sedan fired several shots, one of which struck him in the neck.
Despite his efforts to escape by scaling a fence, he succumbed to his injuries in a nearby backyard.
In the months that followed, investigators worked to bring justice for Parks. On December 7, 2020, police arrested Daquandre Perry, then 22 years old, and charged him with first-degree murder in connection with Parks' death. Prosecutors presented a case that included video evidence allegedly showing Perry and another man exiting the sedan at an apartment complex shortly after the shooting. They also argued that front-end damage to the car was consistent with it striking the dirt bike and that Perry's DNA was found in the driver's seat.
Perry's defense team countered the prosecution's narrative, highlighting that the DNA of three other individuals was also discovered in the vehicle. They emphasized that no murder weapon had been recovered and that there were no witnesses who could definitively identify the car or the people inside it. After a trial, a jury found Daquandre Perry not guilty of first-degree murder on April 28, 2022. To date, no other arrests have been made in the shooting death of John Parks Jr.
