In the pre-dawn hours of October 28, 2024, a domestic disturbance in a home in Omaha, Nebraska, escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 45-year-old Rebecca Nutter Geiger, a White female. The incident unfolded at her residence in Sarpy County, south of Highway 50 and Giles Road. A 911 call was made by Geiger's 19-year-old daughter, who reported that her father, Rory Geiger, had shot her mother and was also threatening her with a firearm.
Another daughter, aged 14, was also present in the house at the time of the incident.
Upon their arrival at the scene, deputies from the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office were met with gunfire coming from the house. In the ensuing confrontation, law enforcement officers returned fire. Once inside the residence, they discovered Rebecca Geiger, who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband, 44-year-old Rory Geiger, was also found deceased inside the home.
The initial investigation has identified Rory Geiger as the suspect in his wife's death. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances of his death, including whether his gunshot wounds were self-inflicted or a result of the exchange of fire with deputies. The five deputies who were involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, a standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. No deputies were injured during the incident. Investigators are reviewing body camera footage and any other available video from inside and outside the home to piece together the events of that morning. It was also reported that deputies had responded to a prior domestic incident at the same residence a month before the fatal shooting, though no arrests were made at that time.
Rebecca Geiger was a special services teacher at Westside High School in Omaha, where she was remembered by the district as an exceptional educator and mentor. Her death has been described as a profound loss for the school community, with many students and colleagues expressing their grief and sharing fond memories of her kindness and dedication.
