Alonni Barfield, 6, a Black/African American girl, was at home in North Omaha on the afternoon of December 15, 2024, when she suffered a gunshot wound inside a residence near 32nd Street and Redick Avenue. First responders found her critically injured around 4 p.m. and rushed her to Nebraska Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Investigators and the Douglas County Attorney said preliminary autopsy findings showed she was shot in the head.
Police described the shooting as accidental and initially indicated they were not seeking a separate shooter.
Court records later detailed how the firearm had been kept loaded and unsecured under a mattress in the home. The child s teenage sibling found her bleeding and tried to help as 911 was called; three other children ages 8, 13, and 15 were present in the residence that day. The documents also noted that a gun box was available in a closet but the weapon was not stored in it.
After several weeks of investigation, Alonni s mother, 33-year-old Yolonda Barfield, was arrested and booked into Douglas County Corrections on charges of child abuse by neglect resulting in death and child abuse by intent. She later appeared in court, where prosecutors outlined the circumstances surrounding the unsecured, always loaded firearm kept beneath the bed. Authorities consistently characterized the shooting as accidental even as the case proceeded on the child-abuse charges.
