On July 1, 2014, 35-year-old Ira Hopkins was celebrating his birthday outside his home in the Village of Windhover Apartments in Newark, Delaware. As he and his friends gathered, two armed individuals, identified as Isaac LeCompte and Jy’Aire Smith, approached the group with the intent to rob them. The confrontation escalated when the assailants demanded money, resulting in gunfire that fatally wounded Hopkins and injured another individual.
