Debra Leonard, a 67-year-old White/Caucasian female from Dover, Delaware, died on January 7, 2022, after a shooting inside a home in the 200 block of Harriet Street. That Friday evening, at about 7:19 p.m., Delaware State Police were sent to the residence for a report of a shooting. The call came from Kyle Leonard, Debra's son, who told 911 that he had shot and killed his mother inside the home.
When troopers arrived, they found Kyle Leonard outside in the front yard.
He was taken into custody without incident. Inside the home, officers found Debra Leonard dead from an apparent gunshot wound. Police also recovered a pistol at the scene. The early investigation described the killing as a domestic incident, with Kyle Leonard accused of fatally shooting the mother he lived with.
Kyle Leonard, then 35, was arrested and initially charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. After arraignment, he was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on a $200,000 cash bond. Public reports at the time emphasized that the arrest came quickly because Kyle himself had called authorities and admitted the shooting before troopers reached the house.
More than a year later, the case moved from arrest to conviction. In May 2023, Kyle Leonard, then 37, pleaded guilty in Kent County Superior Court to second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Debra Leonard. A judge sentenced him to 40 years in prison, suspended after 30 years for six months of work release or home confinement, followed by two years of probation.
Outside the criminal case, Debra was remembered by loved ones as Debra Kay Leonard, a mother of three whose life had centered heavily on family and caregiving. Obituary information described her as a longtime nurse who worked at Christiana Care for more than 25 years, remembered by colleagues as caring, generous, and warm. Her death came not as a random act in the street, but inside a home where family ties should have offered safety, and the person arrested, charged, and ultimately convicted was her own son.
