Antione DeCarlo Caceres, a 34-year-old Black / African American male, was killed on the night of February 1, 2023, after gunfire broke out in Wilmington, Delaware. The shooting was reported at about 9:52 p.m. in the 2400 block of Bowers Street, where Wilmington police arrived and found him suffering from gunshot wounds. He was identified in reports as being from New Castle, Delaware.
Despite the arrival of police and emergency response, he died at the scene.
The killing unfolded in the Riverside area of Wilmington and quickly became a homicide investigation. Police assigned the case to Detective John O’Connor Jr. of the Wilmington Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division. In the days after the shooting, investigators worked to identify who they believed was responsible, and the case moved from a fatal shooting investigation into a murder case with a named suspect.
Authorities later identified Leroy Williams of Chester, Pennsylvania, as the suspect. Police obtained warrants for his arrest, and on February 9, 2023, members of the United States Marshals Task Force arrested Williams in Brookhaven, Pennsylvania, without incident. His arrest came a little more than a week after Caceres was killed.
Williams was extradited to Delaware on March 10, 2023. After being returned to Delaware, he was charged with Murder First Degree, Attempted Murder First Degree, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, and Burglary First Degree. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 20 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $2,120,000 cash-only bail.
The available online reports describe Williams as the arrested suspect in Caceres’s death, but they do not provide a detailed account of what allegedly led up to the shooting or the relationship, if any, between Williams and Caceres. The reports reviewed also did not show a publicly available trial result, plea, sentencing, or conviction connected to the case.
