David Thomas Jr., a 41-year-old Black/African American male from Hurlock, Maryland, was last seen alive on September 15, 2023, after traveling to Kent County, Delaware, to visit family. What began as an ordinary family visit soon became a missing-person investigation when Thomas borrowed a relative's vehicle and did not return it. Days passed without contact, and by September 22, his family reported him missing.
Delaware State Police tried to locate him and reach him, but those efforts were unsuccessful, leading authorities to issue a Gold Alert as concern grew over where he might be and what had happened after he left his relatives.
The search ended in a grim discovery on September 29, 2023. Detectives found what appeared to be human remains in a tax ditch in the Meadowbrook Acres area near Magnolia, Delaware, described in some reporting as a water runoff or ditch area. The remains were sent for forensic examination, and the Delaware Division of Forensic Science confirmed they belonged to David Thomas Jr. Investigators determined that Thomas had been shot and killed, turning the case from a missing-person search into a homicide investigation.
Authorities identified 17-year-old Shakur Bowen of Magnolia as a suspect in Thomas's death. On October 2, 2023, Bowen was contacted by police and transported to Delaware State Police Troop 3. Investigators accused him of fatally shooting Thomas and also alleged conduct connected to what happened after the killing, including the handling or concealment of Thomas's body. Police did not publicly release a detailed motive in the initial reports, but they said Bowen was identified through investigative means.
Bowen was charged with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, hindering prosecution, abusing a corpse, and third-degree conspiracy. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 7 and committed to the Department of Correction on a $500,000 cash bond. The case was described as ongoing, with Delaware State Police continuing to ask anyone with information to contact investigators.
