Kendrick Mason, a 22-year-old Black/African American man from Magnolia, Delaware, died after being shot on the evening of May 20, 2025. At approximately 8:07 p.m., Delaware State Police were dispatched to a field along Walnut Shade Road near Autumn Moon Road after receiving a report of an accidental shooting. Troopers found Kendrick suffering from a gunshot wound and immediately began lifesaving efforts. He was transported by ambulance to an area hospital, but his injuries proved fatal. Police publicly identified him on May 27.

The initial police investigation placed Kendrick in the field with three other people. According to Delaware State Police, the group had been target shooting when Kendrick was struck. Authorities described the death as an accidental shooting, but they did not publicly explain which of the other people fired the fatal round, whose firearm discharged, where each person was standing, or the precise sequence of events that led to Kendrick being hit. The case was assigned to the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit and remained under investigation after his identity was released.

Kendrick’s mother, Lauren Mason, publicly challenged the description of her son’s death as an accident. She said Kendrick normally practiced at a shooting range where he held a membership and believed that going to the field on Walnut Shade Road was unlikely to have been his idea. Based on what she said Kendrick had told her before his death and information she gathered afterward, she believed he had gone there to demonstrate a firearm to someone who was considering buying it from him. According to her account, that prospective buyer brought another person, while the fourth person present was a longtime friend of Kendrick. Lauren said she began collecting information from police, relatives, friends and others in a notebook because she wanted to understand exactly what happened.

One detail particularly troubled the family. Lauren said a sight for the firearm Kendrick was supposedly planning to sell arrived from Amazon two days after his death, addressed to the person she believed was going to purchase the gun. She regarded that circumstance, along with Kendrick’s familiarity with firearms and his normal practice of shooting at a range, as reasons to question the accidental-shooting explanation. She also said she asked police to show her where in the field her son had been shot and did not receive the response she wanted. A Delaware State Police spokesperson said the family knew where the shooting occurred but explained that there was no specific 911 address for the farm field and that the publicly released Walnut Shade Road and Autumn Moon Road location was all police were prepared to disclose.

The night unfolded with Kendrick’s family initially unaware that anything had happened. Lauren said she expected him home by 9 p.m. and became alarmed when he was not there shortly after that time. She and her husband checked his location and rushed to the hospital, where they eventually learned that he had died. His family later described the loss as devastating, particularly because Kendrick was the youngest of nine siblings and played an important role in helping his mother with everyday needs. Lauren said he reminded her to take medication, charge medical equipment and drink water, making his absence something she confronted repeatedly in the routines of daily life.

Kendrick had been building a life that his family said was oriented toward public service and law enforcement. His obituary states that he attended Academy of Dover Charter, spent much of his schooling in the Caesar Rodney School District, graduated from Dover High School in 2022 and later studied at Delaware Technical Community College. He hoped eventually to enter the military and become a Delaware State Police officer. Football was a major part of his life: he played for Caesar Rodney and Dover High School and was also involved with state and semi-professional teams. His family remembered him as someone who spent considerable time at the gym and on the football field and who mentored younger boys by encouraging them to make good choices. He had worked as a substitute teacher, had previously worked at Walmart and, according to the obituary, was scheduled to begin a restaurant job the day after his death.

The family’s language about what happened has remained markedly different from the official characterization. Kendrick’s obituary described his death as a murder, while Delaware State Police publicly continued to describe the incident as an accidental shooting. His mother repeatedly called for accountability and said she did not accept the idea that her son’s death should simply be treated as an accident without a fuller explanation of how he was shot while surrounded by three other people. Months later, reporting in January 2026 described the shooting as unresolved and said Lauren was still seeking answers and justice.

No publicly available reporting located through August 18, 2026, identifies any of the three people who were with Kendrick as a suspect, and no arrest, criminal charge, indictment, trial or conviction has been publicly reported in connection with his death. Delaware State Police did not publicly name the person believed to have fired the fatal shot or accuse any member of the group of criminal wrongdoing in the releases concerning Kendrick. The most recent reporting located specifically addressing the case continued to describe it as unresolved, leaving the central question disputed: police initially treated the shooting as accidental, while Kendrick’s family continued to believe the circumstances warranted greater scrutiny and accountability.
