In the early morning hours of September 23, 2013, the tranquility of the small town of Oakfield, Maine, was shattered by a brutal act of violence. Michael Kitchen, a 51-year-old Caucasian male, and his partner, 49-year-old Heidi Pratt, were tragically killed in their home on the Oakfield-Smyrna Road. The couple was asleep when an intruder entered their residence, unleashing a deadly assault.
Neighbors reported hearing gunshots at approximately 4:30 a.m.
and witnessed a truck leaving the scene. When firefighters arrived at the couple's home, they discovered it engulfed in flames. Inside the burned-out residence, authorities found the bodies of Kitchen and Pratt in their bedroom. An autopsy would later reveal that Michael Kitchen had died from multiple gunshot wounds. Heidi Pratt also succumbed to a gunshot wound to the neck.
The investigation into the double homicide and arson quickly led police to a suspect, 32-year-old Matthew Davis of Houlton. The events leading to the murders began with Davis crashing his truck into a building at Katahdin Forest Products. He then stole a company vehicle and drove to Kitchen and Pratt's home. After shooting the couple, Davis set their house and a pickup truck on fire. He then fled in another vehicle stolen from the property. His crime spree continued as he drove to the nearby town of Island Falls, where he set the stolen truck on fire, used a kayak to cross a lake, and then stole another car. He was apprehended by police later that morning.
Matthew Davis was charged with two counts of murder, arson, theft, and aggravated criminal mischief. During his trial, the prosecution presented evidence linking him to the crime scene, though a clear motive for the killings was never established. In December 2016, a jury found Davis guilty on all charges. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison in February 2017. His appeals to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court were later rejected, upholding the conviction and sentence. The violent deaths of Michael Kitchen and Heidi Pratt left a lasting scar on the small community of Oakfield, and the reason behind the senseless act remains a painful mystery.
