In the late summer of 2010, the life of 40-year-old David Harmon, a male resident of Windham, Maine, came to an abrupt and violent end. On the morning of August 31, his wife dropped him off in a wooded area near Land of Nod Road, ostensibly to scout for hunting locations. However, as the day wore on with no word from him, concern grew, and he was reported missing.
The search for David concluded later that day when his body was discovered on a property located on Roosevelt Trail.
An autopsy conducted by the state medical examiner's office would later reveal that David Harmon had died from a gunshot wound, and his death was officially ruled a homicide. The investigation into his death quickly focused on the owner of the property where his body was found, a 44-year-old man named Joseph Green. It transpired that Harmon and Green were acquainted with each other. The investigation by the Maine State Police suggested that Harmon had gone to Green's property with the intention of stealing marijuana that was being cultivated there.
Within a week of the discovery of Harmon's body, Joseph Green was arrested and charged with murder. The arrest took place at his mother's home in the nearby town of Casco. According to police, Green had been cooperative during the investigation. Authorities believe that Green shot Harmon in an effort to protect his marijuana crop from being stolen. Following the shooting, it is believed that Green moved Harmon's body to a different location on his property. A handgun, presumed to be the weapon used in the shooting, was recovered by law enforcement, along with some of the marijuana plants. Green was taken to the Cumberland County Jail to await his court appearance.
