In the early hours of a late June morning in 2009, the lives of two brothers were tragically cut short on a street in Biddeford, Maine. Gage Greene, a 19-year-old Caucasian male, and his 21-year-old brother, Derek Greene, were shot and killed on June 30, 2009. The incident that led to their deaths began after the brothers had been socializing with friends.
According to witness testimony from the subsequent trial, the brothers had left a gathering to get money from someone in their
neighborhood. When they didn't return, a friend went to look for them. An altercation occurred between Gage Greene and 55-year-old Rory Holland outside of Holland's home. Witnesses stated that after Gage pushed Holland, Holland pulled out a handgun and shot him in the chest.
Immediately after Gage was shot, his brother Derek ran across the street toward the scene, yelling, "You shot my brother!". Holland then fired at Derek, fatally wounding him as well. Friends of the Greene brothers who witnessed the shootings said that neither of the brothers was armed.
Rory Holland was arrested and charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of Gage and Derek Greene. He was subsequently held without bail at the York County Jail. The trial, which was moved to Bangor due to extensive pretrial publicity, featured the testimony of several eyewitnesses who recounted the events of that fatal morning. Holland had a criminal record that included a prison sentence for attempted murder in the 1970s.
