In the late summer of 2021, the life of Douglas P. Michaud Jr., a 31-year-old White male, came to a tragic and abrupt end on the front porch of his Biddeford, Maine, apartment building. A landlord and property manager, Michaud was fatally shot on September 14, 2021, at his residence on Union Street. The incident, which shattered the quiet of the residential neighborhood, stemmed from a landlord-tenant dispute that had been simmering for some time.
The man accused of the crime was Randal
J. Hennessey, 30, a tenant in the building owned by Michaud. Court records revealed a history of conflict between the two men, with Michaud having initiated eviction proceedings against Hennessey in January 2020 for nonpayment of rent and lease violations. Although that particular case was dismissed, the underlying tension seemingly persisted. On the day of the shooting, the conflict escalated with fatal consequences. Police were called to the scene around 3:14 p.m. for a report of a man who had been shot. They arrived to find Michaud deceased on the porch.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Hennessey fled the scene on a dirt bike, traveling along train tracks from Biddeford into New Hampshire. His escape was short-lived, however, as law enforcement was able to make contact with him via his cellphone. Hennessey ultimately agreed to surrender and was taken into custody in Durham, New Hampshire, that same evening. He was initially held as a fugitive from justice before being extradited back to Maine to face a murder charge.
The subsequent investigation and court proceedings painted a grim picture of the final moments of Douglas Michaud's life. According to witness testimony from Michaud's pregnant girlfriend, who was present during the altercation, Hennessey shot Michaud multiple times. The attack was reportedly initiated after Michaud confronted Hennessey, telling him to leave his girlfriend alone. Hennessey then allegedly retrieved a handgun and shot Michaud in the chest. As Michaud's girlfriend tried to render aid, Hennessey reportedly returned and fired again at close range. In December 2021, Randal Hennessey pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder. However, in July 2024, after a jury trial where Hennessey claimed self-defense, he was found guilty of intentional or knowing murder.
