On a tragic day in July 2015, the life of 58-year-old White male Kevin Ray Tozier was cut short in a shocking act of violence that reverberated through the small communities of northern Maine. The events unfolded on July 16, 2015, when a man embarked on a violent rampage that spanned two counties, leaving a trail of death and injury in its wake. Tozier, a resident of Lee, Maine, became one of the victims in this string of brutal attacks.
The perpetrator was identified as Anthony Lord.
The violent spree began the previous evening and escalated into a series of shootings and assaults. At a woodlot in Lee, Lord shot both Kevin Tozier and another man, Clayton McCarthy. Tozier succumbed to his injuries, while McCarthy was wounded but survived. Before this, Lord had already shot three other individuals in the nearby town of Benedicta, one of whom, Kyle Hewitt, also died from his wounds. The series of attacks also included a kidnapping and an assault with a hammer on another individual.
The manhunt for Anthony Lord concluded with his arrest in Houlton. He was subsequently charged with two counts of murder for the deaths of Kevin Tozier and Kyle Hewitt, along with numerous other charges related to the rampage. In the ensuing legal proceedings, Lord pleaded guilty to the murders and the other crimes he committed. He was ultimately sentenced to life in prison for his actions.
During the sentencing, it was revealed that Lord's rampage was fueled by distress over the recent death of his infant son. His defense attorneys argued that he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and was frustrated with the ongoing investigation into his son's death. However, the court imposed a life sentence, citing the number of victims and the heinous nature of the crimes.
