On a Sunday morning in Lewiston, Maine, the life of 23-year-old Keyt Hussein was cut short in a burst of gunfire. The tragic events of July 30, 2023, unfolded on Knox Street, the culmination of a bitter and escalating feud that had been simmering for days. Hussein, a male resident of Lewiston, found himself in a parked car, a setting that would soon become a scene of fatal violence.
The air of that late morning was shattered around 10:18 a.m.
when Mohamed Sheikh, a 30-year-old from the neighboring town of Auburn, approached the vehicle on foot. As Hussein attempted to exit the car, Sheikh opened fire with a pistol, striking him multiple times. The attack was sudden and brutal, leaving little chance for escape or survival.
However, the deadly encounter did not end with Hussein's shooting. Inside the car, in the back seat, sat 24-year-old Mohamed Liban, also of Lewiston. As he witnessed the assault on his companion, Liban reacted. He extended a pistol out of the rear window and fired at Sheikh, hitting him multiple times. When police and emergency services arrived, one man was dead at the scene, and another would later succumb to his injuries at Central Maine Medical Center.
A post-mortem examination confirmed that both Keyt Hussein and Mohamed Sheikh died from gunshot wounds, and their deaths were ruled homicides. The subsequent investigation by law enforcement delved into the background of the escalating dispute between the two men. After a thorough review of the incident, the Maine Attorney General's Office made a significant determination. They concluded that Mohamed Liban had acted in defense of Keyt Hussein when he shot and killed Mohamed Sheikh. As a result of this finding, no charges were filed against Liban, and no arrests were made in connection with the violent deaths that rocked the Lewiston community.
