On March 15, 2016, 36-year-old David Anderson was fatally shot inside his apartment at 88 Gilman Street in Portland, Maine. Around 11 p.m., an individual knocked on Anderson's door and, upon the door being slightly opened, fired multiple rounds through it, striking Anderson in the abdomen and wounding another occupant, Abdirahman Abdullahi, in the leg. Anderson succumbed to his injuries, while Abdullahi survived.
