Randy Erving, a 53-year-old White male, was found deceased in his home on McNally Road. An investigation would soon reveal that he had been fatally shot. The events leading to this grim finding began to unfold earlier that day when Randy's nephew, 24-year-old Jeremy Erving, walked into the Somerset County Sheriff's Office and reported a shooting.
Deputies were dispatched to Randy Erving's residence, where they found him in his bedroom, the victim of a single gunshot wound to the head. The investigation quickly focused on Jeremy, who had been with his uncle the previous day. According to police reports, the two had spent the afternoon and evening drinking together. Randy Erving considered his nephew to be his best friend, and they frequently spent time in each other's company. At some point during the night, after Randy had gone to bed, Jeremy shot him.
The morning after the shooting, Jeremy Erving was arrested for operating under the influence while driving his uncle's truck. A loaded. 30-30 rifle was found in the vehicle.
