In the early morning hours of March 2, 2024, a dispute that began over an unpaid bar tab tragically escalated, ending the life of 30-year-old Raoul Mapendo Tshiyuka, a Black male, in Portland, Maine. Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tshiyuka was a beloved figure in Portland's Black community, known for encouraging others to follow their dreams. He had relocated to Portland after his family initially settled in Atlanta.
His life was cut short just days before he would have celebrated his 31st birthday.
The fatal encounter occurred shortly after 1 a.m. outside the New Buja Belle bar on St. John Street. Believing that 36-year-old Abdirahman Mahmoud had left him to pay for drinks at a nearby pool hall they both frequented, Tshiyuka approached Mahmoud's parked SUV. An argument ensued, with Tshiyuka reportedly taunting Mahmoud and attempting to get him out of the vehicle. Although Tshiyuka was unarmed, a friend later testified that he claimed to have a gun. The confrontation became physical, and Mahmoud, who had a handgun in his lap, fired a single shot at close range. After the shooting, Mahmoud allegedly stomped on Tshiyuka before getting back into his car and speeding away. First responders found Tshiyuka with a gunshot wound and transported him to Maine Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later confirmed his death was a homicide caused by the gunshot wound.
Portland police quickly identified Abdirahman Mahmoud as a person of interest. After locating his vehicle in South Portland, police executed search warrants at two different Portland addresses. Later that same day, Mahmoud contacted the authorities, revealing his location on Ocean Avenue, where he was arrested without incident. He was subsequently charged with murder and held at the Cumberland County Jail without bail.
During the trial, Mahmoud's defense attorney argued that his client acted in self-defense, claiming that Tshiyuka had charged at him. The prosecution countered that while Tshiyuka was aggressive, it did not justify the use of deadly force. They presented surveillance footage of the incident to the jury. Despite the defense's claims, a jury found Abdirahman Mahmoud guilty of the murder of Raoul Mapendo Tshiyuka. The verdict brought a close to the legal proceedings surrounding a night that ended in a senseless loss for a family and a community.
