In the summer of 2019, the life of 24-year-old Hannah Janiak, a Caucasian female, came to a tragic end in a dramatic and grim series of events that spanned from Oregon to Montana. Janiak, along with her partner Daniel Salcido and their two-year-old son Aiden, had been reported missing on June 11, 2019. The family's disappearance coincided with Janiak's failure to appear for a jail sentence related to a 2018 burglary conviction in Jackson County, Oregon. Family members described Janiak as a good mother who struggled with mental health issues. The family was homeless and known to camp in the Medford, Oregon area. Financial records indicated their last activity was in early June when they were seen on surveillance video purchasing camping equipment with their son.
The search for the family took a dark turn on July 24, 2019, near Whitefish, Montana. Police in Kalispell initiated a traffic stop on a green 1996 GMC Jimmy with Oregon license plates.
The occupants, who gave false names, were later identified as Janiak and Salcido. Instead of complying with officers, Salcido fled, leading police on a chase. The pursuit ended after officers deployed spike strips, disabling the vehicle.
As law enforcement approached the stopped SUV, they made a grim discovery. Inside, both Hannah Janiak and Daniel Salcido were deceased. The investigation concluded that it was an apparent murder-suicide. It is believed that Salcido shot Janiak before turning the gun on himself. A critical and heartbreaking element of the initial discovery was the absence of their son, Aiden, in the vehicle, which was filled with camping gear but showed no recent signs of a child.
The absence of Aiden launched a frantic, multi-state search involving local law enforcement and the FBI. Tragically, the search ended with the discovery of Aiden's body in a remote, wooded area of Lincoln County, Montana. An autopsy later confirmed he had been shot in the head. The suspect in both Hannah's and Aiden's deaths was Daniel Salcido, who took his own life after killing them. The investigation did not lead to any other arrests as Salcido was the sole person responsible.
