On a Wednesday afternoon in Nashville, Tennessee, 37-year-old Jamal Brandon Campbell was fatally shot in an attempted robbery. The male victim had gone to the Cumberland View public housing development on May 13, 2020, with the intention of purchasing marijuana. While in a breezeway, a man allegedly pulled a gun on Campbell in an attempt to rob him, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
Campbell was struck in the chest during the altercation.
He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he died from his injuries shortly after arrival. Responding officers found a second man, identified as 25-year-old Clarence Rene Baxter Jr., in the stairwell of another building with a gunshot wound to his leg. Baxter was also taken to Vanderbilt for treatment and was listed in stable condition following surgery.
Detectives with the North Precinct investigated the incident and determined that Baxter was the primary aggressor. An arrest warrant was issued charging Clarence Rene Baxter Jr. with criminal homicide for the death of Jamal Brandon Campbell. Investigators were also looking into the possibility that Campbell had fired at Baxter during the attempted robbery. Baxter was to be arrested upon his release from the hospital.
