In the quiet town of Polson, Montana, a story of concern unfolded into a tragic discovery. Kimberly Goodson, a 48-year-old Caucasian woman, had not been heard from by her family for several days, prompting them to request a welfare check on February 16, 2025. Responding officers arrived at her home to a grim scene; Goodson was found deceased under circumstances that immediately raised suspicion. The Lake County Sheriff's Office, along with the Coroner and Polson Police Department, launched an investigation into her death, sending her body to the State Medical Examiner's Office to determine the cause.
The investigation into Kimberly Goodson's death soon intertwined with another violent incident that had occurred two days prior, on Valentine's Day. On that day, a man later identified as 49-year-old Cameron Edward Francis of Gridley, California, had engaged in a shootout with a Polson Police officer during a traffic stop.
The vehicle Francis was driving was registered to Goodson, creating a crucial link for investigators. An autopsy would later reveal that Goodson had died from a gunshot wound, and evidence suggested she had been killed on February 14th, the same day as the police shootout.
As the pieces of the investigation fell into place, a grim narrative emerged. Authorities believe that Cameron Francis, who was reportedly Goodson's boyfriend, shot and killed her in her home. He then fled in her vehicle, leading to the traffic stop where he allegedly fired approximately 27 armor-piercing rounds at the officer. Following his arrest at the Elmo Post Office, Francis was charged with deliberate homicide for the death of Kimberly Goodson and attempted deliberate homicide for the attack on the police officer. His arraignment was set as the community grappled with the violent end to a life.
