Samantha Maher, a 22-year-old Boise State University student, was tragically murdered on July 6, 2000. She was abducted while walking to class on the Boise Greenbelt, sexually assaulted, shot in the head, and her body was dumped in a concrete drainage tank. Darrell Edward Payne was convicted of her murder and sentenced to death. However, in 2008, the Idaho Supreme Court overturned his death sentence due to procedural errors. Payne was resentenced to death in 2010 and died in prison in 2018.
