On a Saturday afternoon in Providence, Rhode Island, on February 27, 2021, the life of 19-year-old Johnjairo Brito was tragically cut short. The young Black / African American man was sitting in a car on Academy Avenue shortly before 2 p.m. when he was targeted in a fatal shooting. Despite being struck by multiple bullets, Brito managed to put the car in reverse, backing out of the driveway he was in and striking a pole across the street.
In his final moments, he pulled the vehicle back into the driveway, where it then hit a van.
Emergency services arrived at the scene and transported Brito to Rhode Island Hospital. However, his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The Providence Police immediately launched an investigation into the shooting, stating that they believed the attack was not random and that Brito had been specifically targeted. The initial investigation, however, did not immediately lead to any arrests, and the case remained under active investigation for several months.
A significant breakthrough in the case came in October 2021. Authorities announced that a 17-year-old juvenile had been apprehended in Massachusetts in connection with Johnjairo Brito's death. Investigators revealed that the suspect and Brito were known to each other, suggesting a possible motive behind the targeted shooting. At the time of the arrest, law enforcement officials stated their intention to charge the teenage suspect as an adult for the killing of Johnjairo Brito.
