On the evening of May 14, 2021, Tyreik Grundy, a 25-year-old Black / African American male, was fatally shot in Providence, Rhode Island. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. while Grundy was seated in a friend's SUV parked in a lot on Pope Street in the Olneyville neighborhood. The tranquility of the evening was shattered when a white coupe, later identified as a newer-model Infiniti, pulled up.
A man exited the vehicle, approached the SUV, and opened the rear passenger door where Grundy was sitting. He then fired a gun multiple times, striking Grundy six times before fleeing the scene in the same white coupe. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Grundy succumbed to his injuries.
The Providence Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. Detectives meticulously gathered evidence, including surveillance footage from 18 different properties in the vicinity. This footage proved crucial in identifying the suspect's vehicle. Through their investigation, police identified Quelon Page, a 32-year-old from Providence, as the man known to drive the Infiniti. Four days after the shooting, on May 18, 2021, law enforcement located the vehicle and seized it, along with Page's cell phone. A search of the phone's data placed it in the area of Pope Street at the time of the murder, corroborating the movements of the white coupe seen in the surveillance videos. Further analysis of the phone's search history revealed queries related to the murder in the days following the incident. In a significant breakthrough, DNA evidence collected from the rear passenger door of the SUV was matched to Quelon Page.
Initially, authorities sought the public's help in locating Page, who was considered armed and dangerous. In September 2021, Quelon Page turned himself in to the police. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Tyreik Grundy. In May 2023, following a two-week trial, a jury found Page guilty of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit assault with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, and carrying a pistol without a license. On October 3, 2023, a judge sentenced Quelon Page to two consecutive life sentences, plus an additional six-year prison sentence.
