In the early hours of June 20, 2021, a Black / African American male named Camron Abass Mbaye, 29 years old, was fatally shot in Providence, Rhode Island. The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. outside a house party on Cheshire Street. Mbaye, who was reportedly visiting from Senegal, and a friend, 24-year-old Abdoulaye Diallo, had entered the party through a back door.
An argument began after they were asked to leave the residence.
The dispute moved outside and escalated into a large physical altercation involving about ten people on the street. During this chaotic confrontation, multiple gunshots were fired. Providence Police responded to reports of the shooting near Cheshire and Salina Streets. Upon arrival, they discovered Diallo unresponsive on the ground and Mbaye inside a Range Rover. Both men were transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Initial reports indicated that the victims were unarmed.
For nearly two years, the investigation into the double homicide continued. A significant breakthrough came when a statewide grand jury indicted 30-year-old Kelvin Maldonado of Providence in connection with the killings. Investigators were able to identify Maldonado as the shooter by using video footage from four different sources. Witness testimony also placed a firearm in Maldonado's possession in the area where the shots were fired. On June 13, 2023, Maldonado was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and several other offenses.
Following a 12-day jury trial, Kelvin Maldonado was found guilty of two counts of murder, three counts of discharging a firearm while committing a crime of violence, and one count of assault with a dangerous weapon. The trial established that Maldonado had murdered both Abdoulaye Diallo and Abass Mbaye, and had also fired at a third man. Subsequently, a Superior Court Justice sentenced Maldonado to four consecutive life sentences for the murders, bringing a close to the case.
