On the evening of March 22, 2014, in Providence, Rhode Island, 18-year-old Douglas Cooper was involved in a gunfight between two groups on Canton Street. As the confrontation unfolded, three officers from the Providence Police Department's narcotics unit arrived at the scene. According to Police Chief Hugh Clements, the officers identified themselves and were subsequently fired upon. In response, they returned fire, fatally shooting Cooper.
