On the morning of August 19, 2019, the life of Adrian J. Shepard, a 34-year-old Black / African American man from East Providence, Rhode Island, was cut short by violence. Around 7:30 a.m., reports of gunfire echoed in the area of Eddy and Porter Streets in Providence. When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Shepard inside his vehicle, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.

Emergency responders transported him to Rhode Island Hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The incident was quickly ruled the city's ninth homicide of the year, launching a murder investigation. Detectives began canvassing the area for clues and witnesses to piece together the events that led to the shooting. At the time, no motive was publicly identified.
In the course of their investigation, Providence Police released surveillance images to the public, showing a vehicle of interest: a red Chevy Avalanche pickup truck. They appealed for any information regarding the truck or its operator, believing it to be connected to the homicide. Despite these efforts and the ongoing investigation, no arrests were immediately made in connection with the case, leaving his family and community searching for answers.
Adrian was mourned by a large family, including his parents, children, and siblings. He had been employed as a driver for the Longshoreman union. Those who knew him remembered his love for sports, including baseball, basketball, and football. He also had a passion for music, with a particular admiration for the rapper Lil Wayne. His unexpected death left a void in the lives of his loved ones.
