On a day meant for celebration, a Mother's Day party in Providence, Rhode Island, turned into a scene of tragedy on the evening of May 14, 2023. Angel Rodriguez, a 44-year-old Hispanic male, was fatally shot while leaving the family gathering on Manton Avenue. The night's festivities took a dark turn, leaving a community to grapple with the sudden and violent loss.
Earlier in the day, an argument had reportedly occurred between Rodriguez and another man at the party, 53-year-old Luis
Sepulveda. While the initial dispute seemed to have been resolved peacefully, the tension apparently lingered. Later that evening, around 11:04 p.m., a fight broke out in the garage of the home. During this altercation, Sepulveda pulled out a gun. He fired two shots into the air before turning the weapon on Rodriguez, shooting him in the chest.
Providence Police responded to reports of the shooting and arrived to find Rodriguez on the ground with a gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel administered CPR at the scene before transporting him to Rhode Island Hospital. Despite their efforts, Angel Rodriguez was pronounced dead at 11:36 p.m. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Sepulveda fled the scene in a grey minivan, sparking a police investigation to bring him to justice.
The investigation led by the Providence Police Department and the Attorney General's Office resulted in the arrest of Luis Sepulveda. Following a seven-day trial, a jury found Sepulveda guilty of the murder of Angel Rodriguez. The conviction, delivered on October 23, 2025, included charges of first-degree murder, discharge of a firearm resulting in death, carrying a pistol without a license, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, assault with a dangerous weapon, using a firearm during a violent crime, and possessing a large capacity feeding device. The verdict brought a measure of legal closure to a senseless act of violence that cut a life short and forever altered the lives of those who knew and cared for Angel Rodriguez.
