In the early morning hours of May 19, 2024, the life of 28-year-old Julio Ariza was cut short by a fatal act of violence in Providence, Rhode Island. Known to his friends and family as "Macho," Ariza, a male, was a self-employed barber who was cherished for his love of sports and the time he spent with his loved ones. He leaves behind a young son, Josiah, as well as his parents and siblings.
The tragic incident unfolded around 5:15 a.m.
on Admiral Street, where Ariza was found with a gunshot wound to his back. He was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead upon arrival. At the time of the shooting, Ariza was reportedly walking to his car with his girlfriend. A memorial of candles and flowers quickly grew at the site of the shooting, where friends and family gathered to mourn his sudden and violent death. His passing marked the third homicide in the city of Providence for the year 2024.
Providence Police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding Ariza's death, which they have classified as a homicide. As of now, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects. The investigation has led police to consider a possible connection between the shooting and an illegal "sip joint," an unlicensed after-hours establishment, that was reportedly operating near the scene of the crime. Authorities have noted that such unlicensed venues have been associated with violence in the past. Another theory, stemming from street sources, suggests a possible link between the shooting and Ariza's recent release from federal prison just two months prior. He had been sentenced in June 2023 to two years in federal prison for his role in a counterfeit check scheme. The investigation into who is responsible for Julio Ariza's death remains ongoing.
