On December 11, 2021, 33-year-old James Owens, a Providence-based rapper known by his stage names "Hammer Beanz" and "Hammer Hendrix," was fatally shot outside his residence on Huxley Avenue. The incident occurred around 9:50 p.m., when officers responded to reports of a shooting. Owens was found in his driveway with multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. This marked Providence's 23rd homicide of the year.
