On the evening of June 5, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace on Harvard Avenue in Providence, Rhode Island, leaving one man dead and another critically injured. Corey Towns, a 34-year-old Black / African American male, was fatally shot while sitting on a park bench with another man. The incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m.
Towns and a 48-year-old man were reportedly engaged in a card game when an unidentified assailant approached them and opened fire.
Both men were struck by the gunfire. Emergency services arrived at the scene and transported both victims to a local hospital. Towns was pronounced dead upon arrival, while the second victim was treated for critical injuries and was later reported to be in stable condition.
In the wake of the shooting, the community mourned the loss of Towns, who was remembered as a father and grandfather. At the time of the initial reports, law enforcement had not identified any suspects, and the motive for the shooting remained unclear. The death of Corey Towns marked the fourth homicide in the city of Providence in 2024. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with no arrests having been announced.
