On a cold January morning in 2015, the community of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, was shaken by a brutal act of violence that claimed the lives of two young people. Twenty-three-year-old Kayla Ann Glover and Gary Wayne Baskins were discovered shot to death inside a vehicle at Jody's Truck Stop on Highway 72. The news of the double homicide, carried out in an execution style, sent ripples of fear and disbelief throughout the Shoals area, a place where such violent crimes were exceedingly rare.
Kayla, a graduate of Brooks High School and a former student at Northwest Shoals Community College, was working as a hostess at a local Texas Roadhouse. Remembered as a beloved daughter, sister, and mother to a young daughter, her life was cut tragically short. The fact that Kayla was the daughter of a Florence police officer brought an even greater sense of urgency and sorrow to the investigation. Baskins, who was 25, had recently been released from prison and was reportedly trying to turn his life around.
For years, the case remained a painful open wound for the families and the community, with investigators tirelessly pursuing leads. A significant breakthrough came in January 2021 when Shawn Ryan was arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with the killings. The investigation, however, did not stop there. In a more recent development in August 2024, another man, Travis Eric Fallows, was indicted on four counts of capital murder. The charges against Fallows were for the deaths of Kayla Glover, Gary Baskins, and tragically, Kayla's unborn child. This indictment brought new hope for justice, though it also underscored the profound loss suffered on that winter day. Fallows is currently being held without bail as the case proceeds.
