On a winter day in Athens, Alabama, the life of 72-year-old Linda Baugher Phillips was tragically cut short. On Friday, January 6, 2017, the community was shaken by the news of her death, which authorities would later describe as a result of a violent act that also claimed the life of her husband.

Law enforcement officials concluded that Phillips was the victim of a murder-suicide, having been fatally shot by her husband before he turned the weapon on himself. The quiet neighborhood was left to grapple with the sudden and devastating loss of two of its residents.
In the wake of this tragedy, those who knew and loved Linda sought to find a way to honor her memory and seek some form of justice for her untimely death. Her estate took legal action, filing a lawsuit that sought $10 million in damages, a testament to the profound loss felt by her family.

A member of the Fairview Baptist Church, her final services were held at the Limestone Chapel Funeral Home, with her burial taking place at the Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery.
