Darien Hayes, a 22-year-old male of African American ethnicity from Cleveland, OH, tragically lost his life on January 25, 2017. Hayes was one of three men fatally shot in two separate incidents on Cleveland's east side that night. The first incident involved Carlos Hurt, who was shot while sitting in his vehicle. a larger crime spree involving members of the Heartless Felons gang. The investigation revealed that Hayes, along with Julius Claxton and Da'Montais Banks, attempted to carjack Carlos Hurt. When Hurt refused to give up his car, Banks fired a bullet into Hurt's lap, causing a fatal injury. Hayes and Claxton then fled the scene in a stolen SUV and later engaged in a shootout with members of a rival gang, Loyal Always.
The investigation led to the arrest of Cedric Shephard and Robert Shepard, who were charged with the slayings of Claxton and Hayes. Both men were found to have been involved in the shootout and were taken into custody after a pursuit. The case highlighted the ongoing gang violence in Cleveland and the severe consequences of such conflicts.
The legal proceedings against those involved in Hayes' death were extensive. Da'Montais Banks faced multiple charges, including aggravated murder and criminal gang activity. Banks was eventually convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
