In the summer of 2023, the life of a promising 17-year-old Black / African American male named Darnell Whitford was tragically cut short on the streets of Providence, Rhode Island. On the night of Friday, July 14, Darnell was walking with a female friend near the intersection of Dexter and Waldo streets. The evening took a fatal turn when a car approached them, and an argument broke out between Darnell and the vehicle's occupants.
The verbal dispute escalated with shocking suddenness, ending when Darnell was shot in the stomach at close range. He was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.
Darnell was known as a natural athlete, a standout football player for the West Warwick Steelers, where he was not just a teammate but also a leader and a loyal friend. His sudden death left his parents, Jeniffer Robinson and Robert S. Whitford, and his three siblings in mourning. The community remembered a young man's life taken far too soon, a loss that rippled through his family and friends.
In the days following the shooting, Providence police detectives worked to piece together the events of that night. Their investigation led them to identify a suspect, and they issued an arrest warrant for 24-year-old Samuel Medina on a murder charge. Police indicated that Medina was not alone and that as many as three other males who were with him might also face charges. About a month after the fatal shooting, Samuel Medina turned himself in to the authorities.
Medina, who was on probation for a previous crime at the time of the incident, was subsequently indicted by a grand jury. He faced multiple felony charges, including first-degree murder. During his arraignment, a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf. A judge ordered that he be held without bail pending further court proceedings. The case continues to move through the legal system, with a pre-trial conference scheduled for early the following year.
