On a Friday afternoon in Providence, Rhode Island, a life was cut short in a burst of violence that marked another grim statistic in the city's rising homicide count. Jean Carlos Mercedes, a 27-year-old Hispanic male, was sitting in his car on Lenox Avenue on December 11, 2020, when he was fatally shot.
