On the night of July 22, 2013, in Ville Platte, Louisiana, 32-year-old Joseph John, a Black male, was shot in front of a relative's home on East Wilson Street. He was rushed to a local hospital and then airlifted to another facility in Lafayette, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The initial investigation into the shooting was hampered by a climate of fear, as witnesses were hesitant to come forward with information.
