On what should have been a joyous celebration of his 18th birthday, Dari Fabian Balbuena Mesquin, a Black/African American male, was tragically shot and killed on August 25, 2024. The incident occurred outside of his home on Rhodes Street in Providence, Rhode Island, during a gathering. He was discovered with a gunshot wound to his chest and was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
His death marked the city's sixth homicide of the year.
Known for his kind heart and radiant smile, Dari was described as an individual who was always willing to lend a helping hand. His untimely death has deeply affected his family and the Providence community, who remember him as a good son and friend. He is survived by his mother, Darisa, his brother, Darling, his sister, Darielis, and other extended family members.
In the weeks following the shooting, the Providence Police conducted an extensive investigation into Dari's death. Their efforts led to the arrests of three suspects on October 16, 2024. The individuals taken into custody were 18-year-old Jalen Santiago, 20-year-old Julien Santiago, and 19-year-old Jose Diaz, all from the nearby city of Pawtucket.
The three men were each charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy in connection with the fatal shooting of Dari Fabian Balbuena Mesquin. During their arraignments, all three suspects were ordered to be held without bail. The arrests brought a measure of progress in a case that had deeply saddened and concerned the local community, highlighting ongoing calls to address violence and support the area's youth.
