On June 4, 2014, 35-year-old Harold "Harry" Lawton Murphy was fatally shot by a Rapid City police officer during a traffic stop. The incident began when officers attempted to pull over an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) operated by Murphy. Instead of complying, Murphy fled on foot, leading officers on a brief pursuit. After being tackled by Officer Jerrell Lewellen, Murphy brandished a handgun and fired shots. In response, Officer Lewellen returned fire, resulting in Murphy's death.
