In the early hours of a Monday in late May of 2015, the life of 22-year-old Charles Metcalf, a Native American male, was tragically cut short in Rapid City, South Dakota. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died on May 24, 2015. The circumstances of his death would soon unravel a story of family conflict turned fatal.
Authorities quickly identified a suspect, arresting 20-year-old Sean Marshall at the scene on drug and alcohol charges.
The investigation took a significant turn when Marshall was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Metcalf, who was revealed to be his cousin. According to police reports, Marshall admitted to shooting his cousin.
In his statement, Marshall claimed he acted in self-defense, asserting that he feared for his life because Metcalf had allegedly come at him with a piece of broken glass. However, the evidence presented by law enforcement painted a different picture, as it was reported that Metcalf had been shot in the back.
