On November 15, 2016, 39-year-old Jonathan E. Puttmann of Dell Rapids, South Dakota, was fatally shot during a confrontation involving his estranged wife and her boyfriend, Alex Wittenberg. The incident occurred when Puttmann arrived to pick up his children and engaged in a physical altercation with Wittenberg. During the fight, Wittenberg drew a firearm and shot Puttmann in the back of the head.
