On May 2, 2010, 22-year-old Christopher Javier Capps, a member of the Lakota Sioux tribe, was fatally shot by Pennington County Sheriff's Deputy David Olson in Rapid City, South Dakota. The incident began when Deputy Olson responded to a report of an earlier assault involving a Native American male. Upon arrival, Olson observed Capps being pursued by another individual. According to Olson, Capps changed direction and allegedly charged at him with a knife, prompting Olson to fire his weapon.
